Shadowed Pattern

Here's an interesting pattern that Anjali noticed from our lamp. I edited it slightly in picasa to add a bit of light and enhance the shadow. Was hoping to make more shadows come out but couldn't make it happen. Not quite sure how to do that.

  1. Thats really cool. I like it.

I would try to crop it to remove the bottom edge of the lamp.

  2. Pretty cool shot, Amit. I like the concentric circles that are formed by the pattern on the ceiling.

  3. Nice lamp, Anjali :) Ok, j/k - Cool picture, Amit! You got two different sets of patterns in this one.

Would a slightly brighter bulb in the lamp help in defining the shadows better? Hmm..or does that make it worse? I should let the gurus answer your question.

  4. oooh..this seems so ominous. the opposite of the light at the end of the tunnel sort of. i can't tell if the picture would be better if the bottom of the picture was sharper or not.

  5. i lke the projection at the top. There are a couple patterns to note here. I like 'em both!

What could have been done to brighten the projected image?

  6. Nice one. I have always been fascinated with the insides of a lamp :) I have a similar picture. This is well shot, very symmetric too.

  7. Nice one Team-A. Play with the s-curve or the levels in PS to get the desired shadow pattern.

  8. Nice patterns.

The shadow image is dark because the camera exposed for the lampshade, which is very bright. Using a brighter bulb wouldn't help - everything is relative. If there was some way to shade the sides of the bulb while leaving the top clear, that would help. But then there's always Photoshop. :^) I've posted my attempt at fixing it up here:

    edited image

First I masked out the lamp itself so it wouldn't be affected by my manipulations. Then I applied a steep curve adjustment to the shadow part of the image, to increase the contrast between dark and light. I also used some high-radius sharpening, which is another way to increase contrast.

  9. lovely shot Amit.. I looked at the 100% crop image and it looks pretty sharp.. everything seems to be in focus even though you took what seems like a pretty close range shot and with the steep angle.. The light doesn't seem that harsh either..

If you took 2-3 or more bracketed shots and then blend it (picasa latest version might allow the blending.. i am not sure though) then may be the the patterns above the lamp (ceiling?) might come out to be even more dramatic..

over all, awesome job and good set of patterns :-)

Joe, the edited image has quite a bit of yellow-ish halo around the lamp perimeter..
