Rock patterns at Grand Canyon National Park

Here is my first post on this blog. As it turned out, we visited the grand canyon right after this assignment was posted. So, I picked the rock patterns from grand canyon. This picture was taken a little after noon on March 16th, from Lipan Point on desert view drive (south rim). The Hance rapids part of the Colorado river is visible in the center of the image.

Here is some other information about the picture -
Camera - Nikon D80
Lens - Nikkor 18-200mm
Focal length for shot - 18mm
Aperture - f/3.5
Shutter speed - 1/1600
ISO - 100
I did some minor bits of editing in photoshop to improve contrast (don't typically use photoshop).
I don't have any filters, so I was a bit handicapped due to the glare and the haze. The visibility was pretty good (could definitely see things ~60 miles away)

  1. Wonderful. Patterns of nature, indeed. No matter how many times I view pictures of the Grand Canyon, I never tire of it. It is such a clear day.

A polarizing filter might've helped to make the skies a little bluer.

  2. Grand Canyon..I wouldn't have thought of that. Impressive, it does bring back some painful memories. Hiking up the canyon with a hangover is not recommended..a old Indian saying :)

Yeah, the glare & haze take away from the picture a little bit. I would have zoomed into to the rock formations to highlight the patterns.

  3. since its a patterns theme, i would have shown only the different sediment colors and skipped the sky and the ground.

  4. You don't find many patterns as alluring as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. Did you try any close-ups to get the rock pattern formations?
