Playing with my Toys

I roamed the neighborhood this morning looking for color, but it was a gray day.  Back inside, I scanned the living room shelves and came up with this:The title is fitting, since I had to use my new camera, lens, and tripod.

The image is actually a composite of three shots, each focused on a different object.  I tried using the new "focus blend" feature of Photoshop CS4 to combine the three images for increased depth of field, but it failed miserably.  Refocusing the lens actually changes the focal length (duhh!), so my three images were slightly different sizes, and PS couldn't deal with that.  I ended up manually scaling and aligning the three image layers so they matched, then manually masking out the out-of-focus parts.

A higher-resolution copy is posted here:

I hope the result is colorful enough!

  1. Joe, if Tanya was in the picture, it would've been really complete :-)

  2. Joe, I like the picture. However, the pattern on the table is distracting. I would have placed the toys on a mirror instead.

But, I love the technique you tried! I would want to try it for a different assignment.

Also, thanks for an early entry.

  3. Good capture, Joe. All the toys are in sharp focus. CS4 is pretty good, Harsh got you this one, know?

On the flip side, I'm not sure which toy to focus on though.

  4. Love the clarity. Its like I can touch them. A little too cluttered, could do without the mickey mouse in the front. The fish being in the front would have added more color,

  5. ...awesome idea. The models come into focus really well. Lighting is good...maybe some parts show glare (fish) and the table pattern could be solid?

But, the variety of color and subjects make this 'shot' very unique and take into account the resourcefulness of the photographer!!
