color, color what color do you want?

I pick orange.

I wanted to do a photo with a punch of color. After playing with various ideas, I settled on this.
Orange is the fruit of the season. It is also my favorite color. We have been growing plentiful oranges in our backyard. Every morning starts with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and today was no different.

Post processing was done only to crop and retouch to remove a few stray droplets. The shot is just as it was straight from the camera.

  1. Very nice composition. Drops of water dripping gives a sense of freshness, perhaps?

  2. Nice, but would a black or darker background gotten the orange color out even more? There is a backlight behind the orange slice which is a little distracting. But an awesome idea all the same

  4. The back drop is the sun. Naveen is holding the slice of fruit directly covering the sun and pouring water over it at the same time.

I needed wide aperture and fast shutter speed to get this shot.

    Lens: 50mm
    Shutter: 3200
    F-stop: 1.4
    ISO: 100

  5. this is a great shot.. love the asymmetry and the way the subject is occupying one third and though the other two third of the sensor real estate has nothing.. it actually makes the picture look better as opposed to keeping the subject dead center.. I also like the way you didn't include the "complete lemon.. imho, that also makes it look pleasing to the eye..

"The back drop is the sun" is probably the only problem.. too much light for them sensor cells (i see some fringing around the perimeter of the lemon).. you can see blown out highlights in the droplets too.. the contrast could have been better if you managed the light slightly better..

what you could consider trying is.. take one picture with metering for sun as background and another one with metering for lemon and then combine them pictures.. or do bracketing and then process.. a la HDR.. might actually make this look really really cool..

lovely shot to start the series nevertheless.. looking forward to more from you P..

  6. love it. i wonder...if you used a decreased shutter speed and had the orange mobilized...what would the water droplets stream like? Guessing that the volume is too low to have any waterfall-like effect. Would also like to see how this would look with a black background...but, pretty impressive that you are covering the sun!! Our creative minds think alike.....stay tuned for my posting soon!!

  8. Thanks all for the positive comments and the critiques.

Reason I did not use a black background [ yes, i like black backgrounds very much ] is coz I wanted natural setting for this shot.
I did try darker [ green/grass ] background but that did not look as good. The sun kind of illuminates the orange and I like it. Also, gives it a translucent effect.

Seshu, If I meter for the sun, won't that get too bright?? And what is 'HDR'?

  9. This is an excellent composition. I love the backlit orange slice and the frozen water drops, and the cropping is perfect. The only improvement I might try is increasing the contrast in the orange. Maybe some high-radius sharpening would help.
