Holy Murano!

So, this is my first feeble attempt at this.  I was trying to get the color out of the Murano vase but was struggling with getting the right lighting and background.  On a whim, I decided to see what happened if I slowed the shutter down real slow and make the light a part of the picture.  The C that you see, doesn't stand for Chethan, but was me moving the lamp (industrial strength) around the vase while my lovely assistant pushed the silver button.   I didn't edit the picture any, and couldn't get the smudges out of the table despite generous amount of windex.  Not sure how to get it out in post-processing either w/ iPhoto.
Shutter: 1.6
Aperture: F/3.8

  2. amit, forget the smudges for now.. this is a lovely abstract.. it looks pretty cool.. love the reflections and the C thing.. I also like the fact that this is in "portrait" mode.. the background looks pretty nice too..

people are guaranteed to spend a few minutes looking at this and scratching their head to see what this is all about.. for sure..

something to try out next time: the white is blown out and that is a bit distracting.. the industrial strength was a bit too strong i guess.. you might want to tinker around contrast, shadows and brightness.. and a little bit of sharpening the image will surely help.. if you have soo much light to play with.. and the surface is something that reflects a lot.. you might want to use a polarizer and see if it helps (though it doesn't help with all surfaces/reflections)..
it might also give you couple of extra f-stops or some more shutter speed without blowing the image up..

  3. Good shot, Amit. A very creative shot. Its a great screen saver.

The light in the background is over-exposed, but I guess that's hard to control unless u use a neutral density filter (at-least that's what theory says).

Photoshop can certainly help u there, right Joe?

  4. Awesome shot. Agree that the background takes away from the main object..it could have been a little softer.

  5. love the reflection shots and I think this one works. I like the bottom of the vase as it shows more in the reflection than with the direct shot. Maybe a little too much light.

I like the 'C' and will assume it stands for Chethan!!

  6. I like the subject, and the creative use of light painting. Good sharp focus. It would look even better if you brought the black level down, making the
shadows darker to draw attention to the light.
