Bringing home the bacon

Thought would start of with some basic colors - Black & White - A few rays of evening Sun.

While I was at it, ummm...why not add a little flesh, a gold skirt and high heels for sex appeal.

Hold it!!!! ... before you dirty minds start sliding down the slippery slope, Watch out for those lovely Angel feathers and the Divine Halo.

My Guardian Angel Piggy to keep me on my toes and avoid the last rays of the evening Sun to complete my assignments !

capturing THE moment....

i've always admired shots with fast shutter speed (action, sports) where you can 'freeze' a moment that the naked eye would never see in this way. My lovely assistant and I took a number of shots and even broke a martini glass in the process....but, we both liked this one the best. I have others on my Picasa site with multiple colors in wine glasses, but couldn't get individual droplets to shine like this.

Shelf Life

Here's my first attempt. Every morning I wake up and see my bookshelf, and this is what I see.

Nikon D40X
Focal Length: 45.0 mm
Exposure time 0.077 s (1/13)
Aperture: f/5.3
ISO 1600
I am not good with deadlines or following "specific" orders/directions/requirements.. found it very hard to take a shot that even remotely matches the theme of the week Naveen proposed.. I was at my buddy's restaurant this evening and when one of the chefs was cooking.. and i took a shot (among many others)...

I used my sigma 50mm 1.4.. kicks the daylights out of the canon nifty fifty or almost all others in all aspects with in the price-range or double the price range.. except for the Leica and the Zeiss which require me to sell one of (my) kidneys to own them..

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/7.1
Shutter speed: 1/160
Metering: Matrix (i actually didn't pay attention to it. it was default
Camera: Canon 5d (the old one)

If anyone has enough time to take a look at the other "contenders" i had before i decided on this one.. check this

have a wonderful weekend folks..

its raining outside..

Psychedelic Love

This is what popped into my mind as soon as I heard about the assignment. Dunno where it came from, I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the fungi family. In all seriousness though, this is probably what the world needs..people of all colors coming together, shroom or no shroom.

It took forever to get the pencils aligned. Leena helped me get it right.

Lens: 50mm
fstop: 3.2
exp: 1/8s
ISO: 200

I had to do some post processing to straighten the picture & sharpen it a bit.

Holy Murano!

So, this is my first feeble attempt at this.  I was trying to get the color out of the Murano vase but was struggling with getting the right lighting and background.  On a whim, I decided to see what happened if I slowed the shutter down real slow and make the light a part of the picture.  The C that you see, doesn't stand for Chethan, but was me moving the lamp (industrial strength) around the vase while my lovely assistant pushed the silver button.   I didn't edit the picture any, and couldn't get the smudges out of the table despite generous amount of windex.  Not sure how to get it out in post-processing either w/ iPhoto.
Shutter: 1.6
Aperture: F/3.8
Focal length: 22mm

color, color what color do you want?

I pick orange.

I wanted to do a photo with a punch of color. After playing with various ideas, I settled on this.
Orange is the fruit of the season. It is also my favorite color. We have been growing plentiful oranges in our backyard. Every morning starts with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and today was no different.

Post processing was done only to crop and retouch to remove a few stray droplets. The shot is just as it was straight from the camera.

Its All About Colors

This piano/xylophone combo toy was a gift Aanya got on her birthday. Ever since I saw it, I was tempted to shoot it, since the colors were so captivating (most of the colors are bright). The colors almost always put me in a uplifting frame of mind.

I used my 50mm prime lens, placed the toy next to a window (not much sun-shine to play with). Set the ISO to 100, since I didnt want much noise in the picture. Post-processing done to crop the picture, and to add the border and title.

It looks like Blogger cropped away the right side of my picture to fit the blog page, so be sure to click on the image to see the whole thing.

Playing with my Toys

I roamed the neighborhood this morning looking for color, but it was a gray day.  Back inside, I scanned the living room shelves and came up with this:The title is fitting, since I had to use my new camera, lens, and tripod.

The image is actually a composite of three shots, each focused on a different object.  I tried using the new "focus blend" feature of Photoshop CS4 to combine the three images for increased depth of field, but it failed miserably.  Refocusing the lens actually changes the focal length (duhh!), so my three images were slightly different sizes, and PS couldn't deal with that.  I ended up manually scaling and aligning the three image layers so they matched, then manually masking out the out-of-focus parts.

A higher-resolution copy is posted here:

I hope the result is colorful enough!

Make better photographers?

I take pictures. And I take more pictures. I download them. Occasionally, to my dismay, many a picture has flaws in them. A pole sticking out of the head? Blurred image?

How can I shoot better pictures?

Here is where all my friends come into the picture. I shoot. I post. You shoot. You post. I err. You correct me. You blur, I critic you. Makes sense?
